About LocalGovChat
So much focus in government communications right now is on federal government using social media for transparency – #opengov – through data, applications and real-time dashboards. The movement is exciting and certainly important and cities, especially mine, are charging forward right along with them.
But for localgov communications folks – who tend to be the public relations, media relations, community outreach, graphics designers, publicists, webmasters, copyeditors, community managers, speechwriters, consiglieres, etc. for their one single elected client – we have our own set of issues, talents and limitations. Let’s help each other.
#localgovchat is a community that we hope to build to discuss these issues live on Wednesday nights from 9 pm to 10 pm EST on Twitter. We welcome anyone and everyone to come talk to each other, teach each other, learn with each other, yell at each other or whatever.
Participated in my first #LocalGovChat tonight. Great comments, but I don’t think Twitter is the best medium for near-synchronous chat. I think it’s really important for Local Government to be Best Practice driven, including our choice of Web & Social Media tools. Let’s not try to pound nails with screwdrivers!
John, there are hundreds (if not thousands) of very popular near-synchronous chats on Twitter. So I think it’s probably a matter of what tools you’re using to monitor the conversation. There are a bunch, Chatcatcher, Tweetgrid, etc. If you find one that you especially like, share!
